Ingredients:

  • 1 box devil's food cake mix
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/3 cup corn oil
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 cup unsalted butter cut into pieces
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Directions:

  1. Heat oven to 350.
  2. Butter 3 nonstick 8 cake pans.
  3. Combine cake mix, water, eggs, oil, sour cream, vanilla and kosher salt in bowl of mixer.
  4. Beat on low speed until mixture is well blended.
  5. Increase speed to medium and beat 2 minutes then stir in chocolate chips.
  6. Pour batter into pans and bake for 25 minutes.
  7. When cool put icing between layers and on tops and sides of cake.
  8. To make icing put chocolate chips in metal bowl of a stand mixer fitted with whisk attachment.
  9. Combine sugar, milk, butter and kosher salt in a medium saucepan over high heat.
  10. Bring to a boil stirring occasionally.
  11. Let boil vigorously for exactly 1 minute.
  12. Pour the hot sugar mixture over the chocolate then add vanilla.
  13. Beat on medium speed until mixture begins to thicken to spreading consistency.
