Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 egg , beatened
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 5 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 5 tbsp. cream
  • 2 tbsp. butter

Directions:

  1. Pour the boiling water over the dates and soda. Let stand while mixing the brown sugar, vanilla, egg, and butter together.
  2. Sift and add alternately with the date mixture, brown sugar mixture and flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Mix well and pour into a greased and floured 9x13-inch pan.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes.
  5. Ice while warm.
  6. Frosting: Boil the brown sugar, cream and butter in a small pan for 3 minutes. Pour over cake and spread.
