Natural Wool Pre-Dye  (Mordant)

Ingredients:

  • 1 3/4 tsp powdered alum
  • 1 gallon soft water

Directions:

  1. Stir alum into water over heat. Add wool.
  2. Gradually increase the temperature of the mixture until it reaches the simmering point. This should take about an hour.
  3. Stirring wool occasionally, simmer another hour.
  4. Turn off heat and allow mixture to cool to about room temperature.
  5. Proceed with dyeing when wool has cooled, or dry treated wool and store in plastic bags for future use.
