Kalacs (Hungarian Sweet Bread)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 tsp yeast
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 10 cups flour
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 1/2 cups milk

Directions:

  1. Make a sponge dough from the 1 cup warm milk, 2 teaspoons dry yeast, 1 cup flour and 1 teaspoon sugar.
  2. Work together with hands and let rise.
  3. Mix in other ingredients and work until dough separates from hands and board.
  4. Let dough rise again until double its size.
  5. Place in two greased pans; brush top with beaten egg.
  6. Place in a 350 degree Fahrenheit oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  7. After removing from oven, cover with damp towel and dry towel until cool. This will make a soft crust.
  8. Makes 2 pans.
