Directions:

  1. Combine first 5 ingredients in a medium mixing bowl; make a well in center of mixture. Combine egg, buttermilk, and shortening; mix well. Add to dry ingredients, stirring just until moistened.
  2. Heat a well-greased muffin pan in a 400° oven 3 minutes or until very hot. Spoon mixture into muffin pan, filling two-thirds full. Bake at 450° for 18 minutes or until lightly browned.
