  1. Dissolve soda in buttermilk; stir well, and set aside.
  2. Cream shortening in a large mixing bowl; gradually add 1 cup sugar, beating well. Add egg; beat well. Stir in reserved buttermilk mixture and vanilla.
  3. Combine flour and salt in a medium mixing bowl; gradually stir into creamed mixture. Chill dough 2 hours.
  4. Combine remaining 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon in a small mixing bowl. Set aside.
  5. Drop by teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto lightly greased cookie sheets. Sprinkle with reserved sugar mixture. Bake at 375° for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from cookie sheets, and cool on wire racks.
