Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 4 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup oil
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 4 cups flour (best for breads)

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve 1 tsp sugar in 1/2 cup water. Sprinkle yeast over mixture. Set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar, salt, oil, eggs and warm water. Add yeast mixture.
  3. Gradually add flour to mixture until it becomes a ball of dough.
  4. Turn onto floured surface and knead dough, adding more flour as needed until dough is just a little tacky, but not overly sticky.
  5. Place dough in oiled bowl,cover and let rise for about 30 minutes.
  6. Cut dough into 3 equal parts, roll each out and braid the 3 parts together, tucking the ends under.
  7. Place braided dough onto an oiled baking sheet and let rise for an hour or two, or until doubled in size.
  8. Preheat oven when dough is almost done rising to 375 degrees.
  9. Glaze dough with egg and bake for about 30 minutes, or until nicely browned and makes a hollow sound when you knock on it.
