  • 6 tsp of sugars per serving
This includes both naturally occurring and added sugars. According to the USDA, every man woman and child in the US consumes approximately 80 pounds of caloric sweeteners per year! That works out to 25 tsp of sugars per day, or 400 extra calories!
  • For dieters: FoodPoints value is 3
    * FoodPoints are calculated by Fooducate based on fats, carbs, fiber, and protein. They are not an endorsement or approval of the product or its manufacturer. The fewer points - the better.
  • Natural flavors added. Learn why
Companies add flavorings to make products taste better. They are created in a lab and the formulations are guarded as trade secrets. Flavorings can compensate for flavor loss during processing, substitute for ingredients, lower production costs and increase shelf stability. Natural flavorings are more expensive to source than artificial flavors, but tend to be better received by consumers. People sensitive to MSG, vegans, vegetarians and those with allergies should pay special attention to the phrase "natural flavorings" since glutamates, animal products or allergens may be the source of natural flavors. You can always contact the manufacturer for more information.
  • RECIPE: Real Hot Cocoa!
Pre-packaged hot chocolate is filled with sugar - in fact in nearly all pre-mixed hot chocolate, sugar is the first ingredient. There's nothing wrong with an occasional treat, but . . . You can make your own hot cocoa for healthier, tastier, fresher and less expensive real hot cocoa. You can also control the amount of sweetener added. To make two cups (mugs) of hot cocoa on the stove top: 1.) Take a half a cup of milk (4 oz) - add one teaspoon of cocoa powder and one sugar teaspoon equivalent of sweetener (varies among sweeteners). Heat on the stove top, stirring until the powder and sweetener are dissolved. 2.) Stir in another half cup of milk, water or a combination of both (4 oz) to taste and heat. Add no more than one teaspoon of cocoa powder and no more than one teaspoon (or equivalent) of sweetener per 4 oz milk/water. Stir until mixed well. To make two cups (mugs) of hot cocoa in the microwave: 1.) Heat milk. Mix one part cocoa with one part sweetener into the hot milk. Stir until well-mixed. *Note: No matter how much you mix, some cocoa will settle on the bottom.
