  • Stevia - Naturally good?
Stevia is considered the most natural non-nutritive sweetener because it comes from a plant. If you were consuming only the leaves, this would certainly hold ground. However, what you are actually consuming is a concentration of steviol glycoside - a chemically altered version of the leaf. Some tout stevia as the miracle sweetener, while others couldn't disagree more. Studies have called it a carcinogen, while other studies say it has medical benefits. Proponents of its use say that it can help improve medical conditions from diabetes to heart disease. Stevia has been used widely in Japan since 1970, but was only approved by the FDA in 2010. While stevia certainly seems like an improvement over other artificial sweeteners, it may not deserve the halo of health it has received - only time will tell. As far as using stevia, keep in mind that like any sweetener, it should be consumed in moderation.
  • Naturally high in Vitamin C
The vitamin C in this product comes from real food, not as a fortified ingredient. This is important because it means you are getting hundreds of additional nutrients from the real food.
  • How caffeinated are you?
Here’s an interesting factoid: It takes our body close to 8 hours to metabolize a single cup of coffee. A cup of coffee can contain 65-175 mg of caffeine. The benchmark is 100mg, and the current recommendation is to drink up to 3 cups of coffee per day. Which means that drinking all 3 cups may leave your body continually caffeinated. • Why is there soy lecithin in my tea?
Soy lecithin in tea? Yep, it's in there . . . We wrote a company making some of these teas to see why soy lecithin is in the teas and got a response: "The soy lecithin in our tea keeps the ingredients smoothly blended together and prevents clumping." While there's nothing wrong with soy lecithin, for many people it's an allergen, a risk of GMO consumption or simply an unwanted addition. If you're one of those folks who are avoiding soy - pay attention to your tea bags. In order to avoid soy lecithin in tea, try "herbal" varieties first and be wary of flavored tea. If you'd like flavored tea, add your own flavors with a drop of vanilla extract, orange oil, honey or lemon juice. Like berry tea? Try a splash of juice instead of pre-flavored tea. And since information can change, always check the allergen label. And just because a tea doesn't have soy lecithin, does not mean it doesn't have soy. "Natural flavor" can often contain soy.
  • Natural flavors added. Learn why
Companies add flavorings to make products taste better. They are created in a lab and the formulations are guarded as trade secrets. Flavorings can compensate for flavor loss during processing, substitute for ingredients, lower production costs and increase shelf stability. Natural flavorings are more expensive to source than artificial flavors, but tend to be better received by consumers. People sensitive to MSG, vegans, vegetarians and those with allergies should pay special attention to the phrase "natural flavorings" since glutamates, animal products or allergens may be the source of natural flavors. You can always contact the manufacturer for more information.
  • Learn about soy lecithin, found here
Lecithins are oily substances that occur naturally in plants (soybeans) and animals (egg yolks). Soy lecithin possesses emulsification properties. This means it can keep a candy bar “together” by making sure that the cocoa and the cocoa butter don’t separate. It is also used in bakery items to keep the dough from sticking and to improve its ability to rise.
