Yellow Split Pea Dal

Ingredients:
1 c yellow split peas
5 c water
2 t butter
3 cloves garlic
3/4 t cumin seeds
3/4 t mustard seeds
1/2 t turmeric
1/2 t cinnamon
3/4 t salt
Directions:
1. Cover peas with water and bring to a boil. Lower heat, simmer very slowly, partially covered until soft (2-2 1/2 hours). Melt butter in skillet add crushed garlic, cumin, mustard seeds, turmeric and cinnamon. Cook stirring over med heat 3-5 min. Add to cooked peas and stir to mix. Add salt, black pepper and crused red pepper to taste. Add water for creamy consistency or more for soup.
