Old doughnut recipe. this makes a ton of dough
Ingredients:
1/2 cup milk, scalded
2 teaspoons yeast
1/3 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
2 teaspoons lemon rind (optional)
1 egg
1 1/2 cups milk
6 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
Directions:
1. Scald 1/2 cup milk; cool; add yeast;
2. Add 1 teaspoon sugar.
3. proof dough.
4. Cream shortening, sugar, salt, nutmeg, and lemon rind.
5. Add egg; mix.
6. Add 1-1/2 cups milk.
7. Add flour.
8. ( i needed a little more milk ).
9. Knead; place in a greased bowl; let rise until doubled.
10. Roll out; cut doughnuts.
11. Let rise 10 minutes.
12. Fry until golden in deep fat 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
13. You can shake doughnuts in sugar or glaze.
