Homemade whole wheat bread - serving size is 2 slices.
Ingredients:
4 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
3 cups water
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 teaspoons salt
6 1/2 cups whole wheat flour, divided
Directions:
1. dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water
2. mix remaining warm water, sugar, oil and salt with 2 cups of the flour - stir until well mixed
3. stir in yeast
4. stir 3 cups of flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing well.
5. turn dough out onto floured surface. Knead for 15 minutes. Adding only enough of the remaining half cup flour to prevent dough from sticking to surface or hands.
6. place dough in greased bowl and let rise in a warm place until double in size (about 1.5 hours).
7. punch dough down, and let rest for 10 minutes.
8. shape dough into two loaves and place in well greased loaf pans.
9. let rise again until double in size (about 1.5 hours).
10. place loaves in preheated oven for 10 minutes at 400 degrees, then lower temperature to 350 degrees and continue baking 25 to 30 more minutes until done.
