Found an old, early 70's, cookbook from a Catholic women's guild in Fairbanks, Alaska. They have some interesting recipes and I thought I would post a few.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter or shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 tbl. cocoa
2 oz. red food coloring
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 cups cake flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tbl. vinegar
butter cream frosting
5 tbl. flour
1 cup milk
1 cup sugar
1 cup butter
1 tsp. vanilla
Directions:
1. Cream butter and sugar, add eggs one at a time beating well after each addition.
2. Make a paste of cocoa and coloring and add to creamed mix. Mix well.
3. Combine buttermilk, salt and vanilla. Add buttermilk mixture alternately with flour.
4. Mix soda and vinegar to foam, fold into the mixture.
5. Pour into a 9-inchlayer pan,buttered and floured.
6. Bake in a 350 degree preheated oven for 30 minutes.
7. Butter cream frosting:
8. Cook flour and milk over low heat until thick, stirring constantly. Let cool.
9. Cream butter, sugar, and vanilla. Mix butter mixture with cooked mixture, beat until light and fluffy.
