Versatile Cooked Salad Dressing (Potato/Pasta Salad, Coleslaw)

This was my grandmother Alice Carbo's recipe. It is for a versatile dressing that can be used for different types of salads. Just change the seasonings that you use in it (celery salt, prepared mustard, salt, pepper, dill, etc.).
Ingredients:
1 egg
1/4 cup sugar (use less)
2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 cup vinegar
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
Directions:
1. Put ingredients except mayo into saucepan, cook until boiling, then add butter. Let cool.
2. Add 2 heaping tablespoons of mayo or Miracle Whip. Add spices to taste.
