This recipe was found in a file box in a lake cottage in New Hampshire. The cottage had belonged to two spinsters near the turn of the century. The recipe has been converted from one that was to be cooked in or on a fireplace.
Ingredients:
1 pint buttermilk or very sour milk
1 cup flour
2 cups graham flour or whole wheat pastry flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup dark molasses
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
optional raisins or walnuts
Directions:
1. Mix all ingredients and pour into greased and lightly floured large loaf pan.
2. Batter will be very thick
3. Bake about 45 minutes.
4. ***This is a very dense bread so care must be taken to ensure that it is done all the way through without overbaking.
5. If desired, raisins or chopped walnuts may be added.
