Tilly's Apple Spice Cake

This is a delicious recipe given to me by my good friend Tilly. The cake is dark and spicy - very appropriate for Christmas or other winter celebrations.
Ingredients:
2 cups flour
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup raisins (or chopped dates)
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups applesauce (or apple pie filling)
Directions:
1. Grease and flour a 8x8 baking pan. Set aside. Preheat oven to 350°F.
2. In a medium bowl, combine all dry ingredients. Add the raisins (or dates) and stir to coat well. Set aside.
3. Cream shortening and sugar for 2 minutes. Add eggs one at a time. Beat well.
4. In small portions, alternately add the flour-raisin mix and applesauce. Begin and end with flour.
5. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan. Bake at 350 for 40 minutes or until a cake tester inserted in center comes out clean.
6. Cool completely on a wire rack. Sift powdered sugar over the cake just before serving.
