The Catfish Place's Hush Puppies

Ingredients:
vegetable or canola oil, for frying
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 1/4 cups milk
2/3 cup chopped onions
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 cups yellow cornmeal
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Directions:
1. Heat oil in a deep fryer or skillet to 375 degrees F.
2. Mix together the sugar, baking powder, salt, garlic salt and pepper. Mix together the milk, onions and egg in a blender until they are a milkshake consistency
3. Whisk together the 2 mixtures and let sit until bubbles begin to form, about 5 minutes.
4. Mix together the cornmeal and flour and gradually whisk in the wet mixture. The batter should be thick like cookie dough.
5. Drop hush puppies into the hot oil by using a teaspoon until they bounce to the surface, about 2 minutes. Continue frying until golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes
6. Remove and drain on paper towels. Serve hot.
