That country flavor from when I was a kid. Just like Grandma made.
Ingredients:
2 (14 ounce) cans green beans, drained (or approx 1 lb fresh)
2 cups water
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon pepper
4 ounces uncooked bacon or 4 ounces cooked ham, diced
4 ounces diced onions
1 dash red pepper flakes, to taste (for a nice little kick) (optional)
Directions:
1. Using the colander, thoroughly drain green beans.
2. Mix water, sugar and pepper until well incorporated.
3. Preheat your cooking pan to Medium High heat.
4. For Raw Bacon - Using a cutting board and a knife, dice the raw bacon into equal size pieces. Place diced bacon into preheated cooking pan. Continually stir bacon with large spoon to keep the bacon from burning. Once cooked add the onions and cook until they are tender and light brown.
5. For Cooked Ham - Using a cutting board and a knife, dice the cooked ham into equal size pieces. - Place the diced ham and onions into the preheated cooking pan. - Using the large spoon, continue to stir the ham and onions until the ham is lightly brown and the onions are tender.
6. Now that the onions are tender add the liquid mixture and the beans.
7. Using a rubber spatula stir the mixture until incorporated.
8. Bring mixture to a boil and turn heat to simmer until beans are tneder to your liking. I like to use fresh and simmer for a long time.
