Stewed Beef - Daging Semur

This is one version of Indonesian Beef Stew. It's sweet and sour (sort of) and one of my favorites. Serve with cooked white rice or fried rice.
Ingredients:
1 lb. sirloin steak
2 cloves garlic
5 shallots or 1 medium onion
1 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp nutmeg
2 whole cloves
salt to taste
2 tbsp vinegar
10 oz. water
1 potato
1 tomato
3 tbsp sweet soy sauce
2 tbsp oil
Directions:
1. Finely slice the shallots and the garlic.
2. Cut the meat and potato into cubes.
3. Cut the tomato into slices.
4. Heat oil in Dutch Oven, or a wok, and fry the shallots, garlic, pepper, salt, cloves and nutmeg for 2 minutes.
5. Add the meat and fry until brown.
6. Add the potato, tomato, vinegar, sweet soy sauce and water. Simmer slowly for 3 hours.
7. Serve with cooked white rice or fried rice.
