Split Pea Soup

I grew up on this soup. I love it.
Ingredients:
2 quarts soft water
2 cups split peas
1 stalk celery, chopped
1 large carrot, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
1/4 teaspoon ground thyme
1 pinch on cayenne pepper
1 bay leaf
salt and pepper
Directions:
1. Combine all ingredients in pot.
2. Bring to boil.
3. Boil hard for 20 minutes.
4. Then simmer until peas are tender (at least 3 hours)
5. Strain fine sieve or blend removing bay leaf.
6. Then reheat to almost boiling.
