South American Hot Barbecue Sauce

Use as a basting sauce for spareribs, beef or poultry.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup yellow onion, minced
1/2 cup green bell pepper, minced
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1/4 cup olive oil
2 teaspoons chili powder
2 cups tomato puree
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1/3 cup dark brown sugar, packed
1/4 teaspoon crushed dried hot red chili pepper
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
Directions:
1. Stir fry onion, green pepper and garlic in oil in a saucepan over moderate heat 5 to 8 minutes until onion is pale golden.
2. Add chili powder and stir fry 1 to 2 minutes.
3. Add remaining ingredients, cover and simmer 30 minutes.
