SHOO FLY CAKE This recipe came from an estate sale. I obtained it when I purchased the family collection from the Crenshaw Estate in Grand Prairie, Texas in 1994.
Ingredients:
4 cups sifted flour measured before sifting
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup shortening
1 cup baking molasses
2 cups warm water
1 tablespoon baking powder
Directions:
1. Combine flour, sugars, salt and shortening by hand until crumbly.
2. Take out 1 cup of this mixture and save to top cake later.
3. Combine molasses, water and baking soda by hand then stir crumbs into the liquid.
4. Grease and flour a rectangular baking pan then pour mixture into baking pan.
5. Sprinkle one cup saved crumbs over top of cake then bake at 325 for 1 hour.
