This is the recipe that is served in the US Senate cafeteria. Very simple. Very Delicious. Use a Honeybaked Ham Ham bone. The store sells them w/ TONS of meat still on them. The flavoring from the glaze is whate really makes this soup.
Ingredients:

1 honey baked ham bone
3 - 4 cloves garlic - chopped
1 bay leaf
1 cup potatoes - cubed
1 cup celery - cubed
1 cup carrots - cubed
Directions:
1. Rinse Beans.
2. Add 2 1/2 quarts of water. Cover and bring to a boil.
3. Simmer for 2 minutes.
4. Pull off heat and let stand covered for 1 hour.
5. Add ham bone, garlic and bay leaf.
6. Simmer covered for 2 hours
7. Add veggies and simmer for 1 hour.
8. Pull out the Ham Bone and cut meat off the bone.
9. Remove Bay Leaf
10. Mash some of the beans against the side of the pot to thicken the soup a bit.

13. Some like to add a bit of Tobasco to their individual bowls.
