I grew up eatting S.O.S It was one of those cheap and easy things that any gravy lover would enjoy. I'm not sure how old I was before my dad finally told me what S.O.S stood for. Served over toast it tasted just as good over potatoes. I bet it would even taste good over pasta or rice but I have never tried it (yet.) It is a pretty standard recipe and would be easy to change up to fit what purpose you need it to.
Ingredients:
1/4 cup unsalted butter (1/2 a stick)
1 onion, minced
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 lb ground beef
1/4 cup flour
2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
1 cup beef broth
2 cups whole milk
salt and pepper
Directions:
1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add diced onions and garlic and cook until onions are translucent, 7-10 minutes.
2. Put in the grand beef and break into pieces with spoon or spatula. Cook until browned and no longer pink.
3. Sprinkle in the flour and cook 2 or 3 minutes. Whisk or stir in the Worcestershire, beef broth, and milk slowly. Bring to boil and reduce heat to medium.
4. Allow to simmer until desired thickness, 15 to 30 minutes depending on how thick you want it.
5. Taste for seasoning and add pepper and salt to suit your taste. Serve over toast.
