Very easy and fast version of an apple tart. I use always to have frozen puff pastry at home since it is so versatile and handy when an unexpected visit arrives... Any kind of fruit filling can be used, according to the fresh fruit you use for this tart.
Ingredients:
1 pkg. frozen puff pastry sheets (2 sheets)
1 egg
1 tbsp. water
1 can or jar (21 oz.) apple sauce
4 medium apples, peeled and cored, thinly sliced
2 tbsp firmly packed brown sugar
2 tbsp flour
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp 4 spices or pumpkin pie spices
2 tbsp lemon peel, grated
Directions:
1. Thaw pastry sheets at room temperature 30 min. Preheat oven to 400°F. Mix egg and water.
2. Unfold pastry sheets. Place 1 pastry sheet on baking sheet. Spread apple sauce on pastry to within 1 of edges. Brush edges with egg mixture. Arrange sliced apples on top of the apple sauce.
3. In a small bowl mix together sugar, flour, spices and lemon peel. Mix well. Sprinkle over the apples.
4. Place remaining pastry sheet over pie filling. Press edges together to seal. Brush with egg mixture. Cut several 2 slits in top of pastry.
5. Bake 30-40 min. or until golden.
6. Cool on baking sheet on wire rack at least 15 min.
7. Cut into squares or rounds with a cookie cuter and sprinkle with powder sugar and more apple sauce if desire.
