This was a recipe that my Girl Scout leader (Mona Prestigiacomo) gave my Mom because I raved about it so much after camping in an Indian teepee! (I earned the Native American Heritage patch that weekend! LOL!) It's really simple, and reminds me a lot of elephant ears that we get at county fairs here in Southern Indiana...
Ingredients:
3 cups flour (sifted)
2 1/2 cups lukewarm milk (or water if milk is not available, like if you're camping!)
3 tablespoons baking powder
1 tablespoon sugar (or salt, if you don't want it to be sweet-tasting)
shortening (to deep-fry)
Directions:
1. Mix dry ingredients.
2. Add liquid and roughly mix.
3. Heat shortening in an iron skillet (about 1 1/2 to 2 inches deep).
4. Drop dough from greased slotted spoon into hot shortening and deep fry until lightly golden brown, turning once to brown both sides.
5. Drain on paper towels.
6. Serve buttered with cinnamon and/or powdered sugar. YUM!
