This is a simple and versatile base for dips and a general substitute for sour cream. I flavor it up differently depending on the situation. It also goes great as-is on baked potatoes, tacos, etc, and if you make it with low-fat or non-fat yogurt it's totally harmless and good for you.
Ingredients:
1 cup plain yogurt
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/8 tsp garlic powder
-- a whole world of possible additions
minced onion and / or garlic
minced cucumber
snipped chives / green onions
chopped parsley, other herbs
dried onion flakes
black sesame seeds and a little sesame oil
chopped olives and 2-3 tbsp italian dressing
salsa, cumin or taco seasonings
curry powder
chopped up cooked bacon
canned salmon
chopped clams with some of the clam juice
... you get the idea.
Directions:
1. Just mix thoroughly, that's all there is to it.
2. I used to put a blob of yogurt on top of a serving of thick soup for a cooling contrast, with a shake of dried dill or something on it for looks. But plain yogurt by itself is very blah and I don't particularly care for the taste. Adding just a little salt, onion and garlic takes away the blandness, gives it a great flavor and makes it comparable to sour cream.
3. For dips I just add more seasonings and additions.
4. Note - Yogurt doesn't work well as a sour cream substitute in cooked foods unless you add it right at the end, as in take the pan off the heat first. If you get yogurt too hot it will quickly break (i.e. curdle).
