I have not tried this recipe. This recipe is from My Great Recipe Cards. This recipe makes a 18-inch braid. Rise time: 1 1/4 hours.
Ingredients:
1 ounce active dry yeast (1 package)
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoons instant mashed potatoes, granules
1/4 cup water
1/3 cup milk
1/4 cup butter or 1/4 cup margarine
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
additional butter or margarine
Directions:
1. In medium bowl, mix yeast, 3/4 cup of the flour, the salt, sugar and potato granules.
2. Heat water, milk and butter to very warm (butter need not melt). Add to first mixture. Beat at medium speed for 2 minutes. Add eggs and 1/4 cup more flour. Beat at high speed for 2 minutes. Stir in cheese and enough flour to make a soft dough.
3. Turn out on lightly floured surface. Knead until smooth and elastic. Put in oiled bowl, turning to oil top. Cover with a sheet of plastic wrap. Let rise in warm place for 45 minutes or until doubled.
4. Punch dough down. Divide into 3 portions. Roll each portion into an 18-inch strand. Braid loosely on greased baking sheet, sealing ends. Let rise in warm place for 30 minutes or until almost doubled.
5. Bake at 375 for 30 minutes or until golden brown. Brush with butter, if desired. Cool on wire rack.
