Recipe from my Iranian mother-in-law. These moist hamburger-like beef patties remind me of White Castle burgers. Can be served wrapped in flat bread or alone a top basmati rice. Can be served hot, or room temperature. Great appetizer. Travels very well.
Ingredients:
1 1/2 lbs ground beef
4 large potatoes
1 medium onion
1 tablespoon flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/8 teaspoon turmeric
1/8 teaspoon powdered saffron
1 large egg
Directions:
1. Peel and grate potatoes, set aside. Grate onion; mix with beef. Add grated potatoes, flour, salt, turmeric, and saffron and mix well by hand or food processor. Mix in egg until well combined.
2. Heat vegetable oil in skillet. Form meat mixture into oval patties and fry each side until well browned. Transfer to paper towel to drain and salt to taste.
3. Note: you may wish to mix saffron in a few tablespoons of water and add it to the mixture.
