Peaches In Meringue Torte

One of grandma Robert's beautiful desserts. Unique baking instructions. This was a birthday celebration meal.
Ingredients:
1 1/3 cups of enriched flour
1 1/2 teasp of baking powder
1/2 cup of shortning
1 1/2 cups of sugar
4 eggs
1/2 tsp of almond flavoring
1/3 cup of milk
1/8 tsp of cream of tartar
1 quart of peeled and sliced peaches (can sub fresh strawberries)
Directions:
1. Sift flour, measure, add bakg powder and sift again.
2. Cream shortning, gradually add half a cup of sugar, cream together until fluffy.
3. Separate ggs and add yolks one at a time to the shortning sugar mix beating well after each addition.
4. Add flavoring,
5. Add flour and mix alternately with the milk about 1/3 at a time, stirring after each addition, only enough to blend.
6. Turn mixture into two 8 inch layer pans well greased and lined with parchment paper or wax paper.
7. Spread batter slightly higher around the edges.
8. Beat egg whites until frothy, add cream of tartar and beat until just stiff butnot dry.
9. Slowly beat in remaining sugar, two tbsp at a time beating each time until smooth and glossy.
10. Spread evenly over two layers of batter.
11. Bake in 325 degree oven for 40 minutes.
12. Cool about 1/2 hour before serving.
13. Slice peaches, cut the slices in alf and sweeten to taste.
14. Put torte layers together short cake style with peaches between layers and add a few on top.
