This is a recipe that my mother made and I now make for my family, a 3 generation family favorite. I added the brown sugar and hot sauce. The whole recipe is estimated as I do not measure when I make this dish and depending on how much time I have I may turn up the oven for the first 20 minutes of baking. I add the water last so I can adjust the sauce to the desired consistency. I also usually double the recipe. My family likes to dip garlic bread in the sauce.
Ingredients:
1 (1 ounce) envelope lipton onion soup mix
1 cup ketchup
1/4 cup vinegar
1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon celery seed
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon of cholula hot sauce (optional)
1 whole chicken, cutup
Directions:
1. Place the chicken in a slightly oiled, foil lined baking pan.
2. Place in a 425°F preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes.
3. While chicken is baking, in a saucepan add the first 7 ingredients. Mix and heat on medium until it is hot.
4. Pour over the chicken and return the chicken to the oven and bake until chicken is done. You may want to turn the oven down to 350 to 375°F so it will not brown too quickly. The sauce will thicken and start to caramelize and should not be watery.
