Found this recipe years OK in a Pfaltzgraff book and it's one thing I make that every one in the family LOVES and always request. There are a lot of ingredients but don't let it stop you, they are great. There are several similar recipes here already but all are just a little different. The added sausage and liquid smoke makes a yummy difference. Always a big hit at barbecues. It makes a lot so great for those family summer gatherings. Edited in response to Brenda's review - I checked the recipe and it doesn't remark on draining the beans - but I do it the same way, drain all but the pork & beans and it seems to be perfect.
Ingredients:
1/2 lb bacon, chopped
1/2 lb hamburger
1/4 lb smoked sausage (sliced & halved)
1 medium onion, chopped
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup white sugar
1/4 cup catsup
1 teaspoon liquid smoke
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 (14 ounce) cans pork and beans
1 (14 ounce) kidney beans
1 (14 ounce) can baby butter beans
Directions:
1. Brown bacon, onions, hamburger and sausage.
2. Drain grease.
3. Mix sugar, catsup, smoke, dry mustard, salt, pepper and add to meat.
4. Combine beans in large oven safe pot (I use a bean pot) and cover.
5. Bake at 350 for 1 hour.
