No-Bake Peanut Butter Bars

For dessert or snacking, these crunchy, peanut butter bars from Mrs. W. Franklin of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta are sure to please. But plan ahead—they need to chill.
Ingredients:
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 cup peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1-1/2 cups crisp rice cereal
1/2 cup cornflakes
icing:
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup evaporated milk
3 tablespoons butter
Directions:
1. In a heavy saucepan, heat brown sugar and corn syrup over medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Stir in peanut butter and vanilla; mix well. Fold in cereals. Spread into a greased 11-in. x 7-in. pan. Combine icing ingredients in another saucepan; cook and stir over medium heat for 8 minutes or until sugar is dissolved and icing has thickened slightly. Pour over bars; spread evenly. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before cutting. Yield: 2 dozen.
