My Mom's Date Squares

:) This brings back nice memories of when my Mom made these. With a glass of milk it makes me HAPPY. Great snack that's actually good for you too.
Ingredients:
1 3/4 cups rolled oats
1 1/2 cups flour
3/4 cup margarine
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup brown sugar
2 cups dates
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup water
2 teaspoons lemon juice
Directions:
1. Combine ingredients for filling.
2. Simmer until thick, being careful that mixture doesn't burn.
3. Cool date mixture.
4. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
5. Lightly grease a 9 inch square pan.
6. Combine soda, flour, brown sugar and oats in a bowl.
7. Work in butter.
8. Pat half of the crumbly mixture into pan, pressing down well.
9. Spread date filling over layer of oat mixture, then pat the rest of the crust mixture on top.
10. Bake 45 minutes.
11. Cool, then cut into squares.
