I tasted these at a BBQ and after quizzing the maker, I came up with these. They are called mouses because they sort of look like computer mouses (which are not called mice even if you own more than one :-)!) They apparently freeze well in layers separated by cling film. I found the Ajvar at my local supermarket and after googling it, it seems fairly easily obtainable. It’s a pureed condiment made in Europe from a mix of bell peppers, eggplant and tomato. There is one recipe on ‘zaar for it if you’d like to make your own but it doesn't contain tomato like the comercial one I bought.
Ingredients:
12 wooden skewers, soaked in water for about 1 hour
400 g ground beef (mince)
400 g ground pork (mince)
1 onion, very finely chopped
1 inch fresh ginger, minced
1 large garlic clove, finely chopped
2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander (cilantro)
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon cumin seed (optional)
1/2 teaspoon chili powder (or to taste)
1 teaspoon salt
fresh ground black pepper
1/2 cup ajvar
1 egg
Directions:
1. Mix all the ingredients together well.
2. Divide into 12 portions and shape around the skewers in a sort of computer mouse shape.
3. Chill for about an hour.
4. BBQ (grill) for a few minutes on each side or until cooked through.
5. Nice served with yogurt and mint on the side or more Ajvar and sour cream.
