Mother's Day French Toast
Ingredients:
1 round loaf sourdough bread
4 eggs
1 cup milk or half & half
1/3 cup water
1/4 cup rum, chambord or bailey's irish cream (optional)
1 tbsp. granulated sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. salt
1 dash pepper
1 - 2 sticks butter, as needed
maple syrup
fruit, such as strawberries, blueberries or raspberries
Directions:
1. Beat eggs in large bowl until frothy
2. Add milk, water, liquor, sugar, cinnamon, salt and pepper, until well blended
3. Pour into a large shallow dish, at least 9x12 inches
4. Slice bread into 3/4 inch to 1 inch slices
5. Place into the mixture, turning often, coating both sides of the bread until mixture is soaked through
6. Can be left covered int he refrigerator overnight
7. On high heat, melt 4 tbsp. butter in a large skillet, until it sizzles and before it turns brown
8. Reduce heat to medium high and with a spatula, gently place slices of bread in the skillet
9. Turn often and cook until bread is light to medium brown
10. Add butter, as necessary
11. Turn onto plate and serve with maple syrup, confectionery sugar or fruit
