My husband's mother (who was from Croatia) made this recipe for him as a child. I still have the handwritten recipe, yellowed with age and spots of tomato sauce! It is so good and unusual. Kids love it..
Ingredients:
2 lbs ground beef
2 chicken thighs (boneless chopped)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 onions (chopped)
1/2 lb mushroom (chopped)
2 garlic cloves (minced)
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon pepper
1 tablespoon nutmeg
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon allspice
5 tablespoons paprika
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 cup parmesan cheese
2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
2 (8 ounce) cans tomato sauce
1 1/2 cups water
1/4 cup parsley (shreaded)
1 (10 ounce) box pasta (we use mostochelli)
Directions:
1. boil pasta till al dente and set aside
2. brown ground beef and sliced chicken thighs in vegetable oil along with chopped onion, mushrooms, garlic and lemon rind.
3. Add salt, pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, paprika, sugar tomato paste and tomato sauce, and water.
4. simmer 1 hour. Add cooked mostocholi and parmesan cheese. serve.
5. This is great left over.
