My husband grew up on Hamburger Helper, Wonder Bread & Miracle Whip. My childhood was different, my mother is the most amazing cook. So good in fact that this Christmas our only gift was her cooking :-) I wanted to recreate his childhood favorite using fresh ingredients we all have readily available on a budget. As simple as my recipe is, it is far better then a pack of outdated dried pasta and dehydrated tomato sauce and he LOVES it! Enjoy, mix and match with your own ideas to this childhood classic so many of you have had. I can wait to see your reviews and ideas :-)
Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef
2 cups cooked corkscrew macaroni (i use organic whole wheat from trader joe's or whole foods in kosher salt & olive oil)
1 medium white onion, chopped
2 green onions, sliced
3/4 cup frozen corn
2 teaspoons spicy mccormick's montreal brand steak seasoning (or more to your taste)
2 -3 dashes garlic salt
seasoning salt
0.5 (29 ounce) can tomato sauce
1/2 cup water
Directions:
1. Boil pasta in kosher salt & a few dashes of olive oil to your taste on med - high. The salt gives the pasta flavor and the olive oil keeps it from sticking. When done, drain and set aside.
2. While pasta is cooking chop your white and green onions.
3. Cook ground beef on medium heat until half way done then drain, put back in skillet with white onion, when soft add corn, then green onion. Next add the cooked pasta and season well with the above seasonings. Stir till combined.
4. Add tomato sauce and water, mix then simmer on med low for 10 minutes then serve with a green salad or baked potato.
5. Enjoy.
