Mom's Soft Ginger Cookies

This is a recipe from Andrew's mother. The smell of the cookies baking always reminds me of Christmas, but we make them all year long. They're very soft.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup shortening or 1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup molasses
1 egg
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon clove
Directions:
1. Cream the sugar and shortening or butter together.
2. Add in the molasses and egg and beat until well blended.
3. Separately, mix together the dry ingredients.
4. Add the flour mixture slowly into the wet ingredients.
5. Use a teaspoon to drop small balls on greasing baking sheets.
6. Dip a fork in flour and lightly press down on the balls.
7. Bake at 375 F or 190 C for 6-8 minutes, depending on the size of the cookies.
