This was the first-prize winner in 1988, but I have lost the information of where it was first prize! I do know the cake is very good. It is by someone named Helen Hubbard. Be sure and put the baking powder in last-that's important. Otherwise the cake doesn't rise properly , says Helen Hubbard.
Ingredients:
1 cup milk
4 tablespoons butter
4 large eggs
2 cups sugar
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Thoroughly grease a 9 or 10 inch tube pan. Heat the milk and butter together in a saucepan until the butter is melted and the mixture is lukewarm. In a large bowl, beat the eggs until foamy. Add the sugar gradually, as you beat, and beat until light and fluffy. Add the milk-butter mixture. Add the flour and beat well, and then beat in the vanilla and salt. Last of all, beat in the baking powder.
2. Pour and scrape the batter into the pan. Bake 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on rack.
