Another way to make a less expensive and more suited version of a convenience food, at home. Another VERY versatile recipe. You can make up a big batch of this and divide it into airtight containers or zipper bags to use whenever you need it. Read more . It's great to take camping, hiking, riding, boating, etc. All you need is hot water when you're ready to eat it!
Ingredients:
quick cooking oats(you will need about 1/2 cup total per serving, so the amount will depend on how many servings you want to make up--1/2 cup for 1 serving, or about 6 cups for 12...and anywhere in between)
kosher or sea salt(about 1/2t per serving, so, again, adjust as needed)
dry milk(about 1t per serving, adjust as above)
various flavoring additions ie brown or white sugar, cinnamon, mini chocolate chips, dried fruits like blends, berries, apples, bananas(though these don't rehyrdate as well)
i suggest starting with about 1t sugar per serving, 1/2t cinnamon, and about 3t of any of the dried fruits or chocolate chips, but, again, once you try it, just adjust to your preference. also, if you want to make one of the 'and cream' type recipes, like peaches and cream, etc, just add another 1/2t dry milk to your ingredients
Directions:
1. In food processor or similar piece of equipment, pulse 1/2 of the oats(more or less depending on what consistency you like your oatmeal), with the salt
2. Add equal amount of the whole oats to the blended ones, then add your additions/flavorings, as above, in a bowl or into the airtight containers. See Photo
3. When ready to eat, add about 1 cup(more or less by 1T or so at a time depending on your dried ingredients) boiling water to bowl.
4. Stir :)
5. **remember, this is a guideline recipe, only...just an informative one to letcha know the basics of making your own instant oatmeal. Play around with it and see if you can come up with your own masterpiece! My photos are of 1 bowl with the ingredients to make about 1 serving of Brown Sugar Cinnamon Oatmeal, and, the finished bowl :)
