1/2 cup non-fat powdered milk
1 tablespoon baking powder

16 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces and chilled (2 sticks)
1 tablespoon vanilla extract

2. To Make the Cake.
3. 1. PREPARE PANS Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
4. 2. MAKE CAKE With electric mixer on medium speed, beat prepared cake mix, 1 1/4 cups warm water (about 110 degrees), and 2 large room-temperature eggs until mixture is smooth, about 2 minutes. Scrape batter into prepared cake pans and bake until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Cool cakes in pans 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire rack. Cool completely, at least 1 hour.
