Luitgard is my mom and came to America from Germany with my dad almost 50 years ago. My dad was an American soldier and met and married my mom in Germany. When they first arrived in America, money was very tight, and she made this recipe often. It's very budget friendly and darn yummy, too! I was raised on this, and it is the ultimate comfort food for me. I still prepare this regularly for my own family. In fact - it's one of my daughters' favorite meals! Mom always served this along with applesauce and green peas.
