A friend from church brought these with dinner when my 9th was born. The other kids went crazy for them. Thank God for fall babies! (These are large, man-size.)
Ingredients:
water
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
2 tablespoons margarine or 2 tablespoons butter
2 1/4 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup shortening
6 apples
Directions:
1. For syrup: Mix 1 cup of the sugar, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp nutmeg, and 1 /4 cups water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in margarine.
2. For pastry: Mix flour and salt. Cut in shortening. Add 6 - 8 T cold water a little at a time, tossing with a fork, until moist enough to form into a ball. Roll into an 18 x 12 inch rectangle; cut into six 6-inch squares.
3. Peel and core apples. (Or peaches or pears.) Place 1 fruit on each pastry square. Combine 1/4 Celsius sugar, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp nutmeg. Sprinkle on fruit. Moisten edges of pastry. Fold corners to center atop fruit; pinch to seal.
4. Place in an oblong baking pan. Pour syrup over pastries. Bake in a 375* oven about 45 minutes or until fruit is tender and pastry is brown.
5. Serve with ice cream if desired.
