Italian Red Sauce

Very simple 80 yr. old recipe.
Ingredients:
6 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus 1 tsp
1/4 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper
2 (29 ounce) cans italian pear tomatoes
16 ounces penni pasta
1 tablespoon fresh basil, chopped
fresh grated parmesean cheese
Directions:
1. Heat olive oil in a large pot.
2. Add chopped onion, 1 tsp salt & the pepper.
3. Saute' onion until soft.
4. Add tomatoes & 1 teaspoons salt.
5. Stir well.
6. Lower heat & simmer partially covered for 45 minutes.
7. Meanwhile, cook penni according to directions.
8. Drain well.
9. Rinse in HOT water.
10. Toss with fresh basil.
11. Add sauce & stir gently.
12. Top with fresh grated parmesean, if desired.
