Italian Meat Sauce

This recipe was given to me by a friend - it has been her family's sauce for several generations. Use it for spaghetti, ravioli, lasagne, etc.
Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef
1 cup onion, chop
1 garlic clove, mashed
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 (12 ounce) cans tomato paste
2 (12 ounce) cans water
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon parsley
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon basil
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
Directions:
1. Brown beef, onion and garlic in olive oil.
2. Add rest and simmer uncovered 2 hours.
3. I sometimes add fresh basil at the end.
