Magic. It's really the only word that can describe this dessert. It creates it's own hot fudge sauce as it bakes! The recipe may seem weird but trust me... when you dig in, you see there's a crunchy, sugary crust on top of a dense, rich chocolatey cake, and on the bottom is a luscious fudge sauce.
Ingredients:
for cake
2 cups all purpose flour, sifted
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
4 tablespoons hersheys cocoa
6 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup whole milk
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup walnuts, chopped (optional)
topping
2 cups packed light or dark brown sugar
3 cups hot water
1/2 cup hersheys cocoa
freshly whipped cream, to serve
Directions:
1. For cake: mix all dry ingredients together. Stir in milk, butter and vanilla and mix until smooth (you may add a little more milk if it's too dry still). You basically want a thick cake batter, like a brownie batter actually. Pour into a lightly buttered baking dish.
2. For topping: Place cocoa and brown sugar in a mixing bowl. Slowly whisk in hot water. Pour over batter (yes, that's right!) and bake at 350 degrees for 35-45 minutes. Sift powdered sugar over it (if desired). Serve hot or warm, with whipped cream.
