Healthier Upside Down Apple Cake

Full of flavour, fruit and fibre! The texture is so tender and moist, and the taste is enriched, from using cream cheese as the main creaming fat and buttermilk for the liquid.
Ingredients:
caramelized apple topping
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup orange juice
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp butter
5 apples, peeled and sliced into 12ths
cake
2 tbsp butter, softened
2/3 cup low-fat cream cheese, softened
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp vanilla
1/2 tbsp maple extract
1 egg
2 1/2 tbsp ground flaxseed
1 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp allspice
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 1/3 cups buttermilk
Directions:
1. Heat oven to 350ºF, grease a 10 cake pan.
2. Combine sugar, orange juice, lemon juice and butter in a deep skillet, bring to a boil.
3. Cook for 5 minutes, then add apples, and cook over medium heat for 15 minutes, until soft and caramelized.
4. Pour the apple mixture into prepared cake pan and spread to an even layer.
5. In a bowl, beat butter, cream cheese, sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, maple extract, and egg until smooth.
6. In another bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, allspice, and cinnamon.
7. Beat flour mixture and buttermilk alternately into the creamed ingredients.
8. Pour batter over apples and spread evenly.
9. Bake 1 hour.
10. Cool in pan on wire rack 10 minutes. Invert onto a serving plate.
