My family used to own a family restaurant, way before my time. Some of the recipes that have been passed down, melt in your mouth. They are a perfect combination of PA Dutch and family comfort food. This is one of those recipes! This also does really well with being frozen and saved for trips, picnics, or days you don't want to cook. I usually double the recipe and freeze the leftovers. Happy Cooking!
Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef (you could also use ground turkey or bison. i have used bison and you cannot even tell the difference)
1/2 cup celery
3/4 cup onion
1 large green pepper
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon celery seed (or flakes)
1 cup ketchup
1 (8 ounce) can tomatoes or 1 (8 ounce) can tomato juice
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon vinegar (red wine, or apple cider)
1/4 teaspoon pepper
little bit butter
Directions:
1. Chop up all vegetables.
2. brown meat in a little bit of butter. Drain oil or fat if needed from the browned meat.
3. Add all ingredients into one large pan.
4. Simmer Uncovered for 2 hours until thick.
5. Feel free to taste and season to your desire as it simmers after an hour. It all takes time to blend together to get its true flavor. I like to add a bit more vinegar and worcestershire sauce to add a kick.
