My great grandmother up in Iowa made the BEST snickerdoodles EVER. And we found the handwritten recipe the other day. They were always the most fun cookies to make growing up, and the the yummiest cookies. .This is a simple recipe.. do not substitute the shortning.. that is what makes the best cookie.
Ingredients:
1 cup crisco shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 3/4 cups flour
1/8 cup sugar, for cookie coating
1/4 cup cinnamon, for cookie coating
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
2. mix sugar, eggs, shortening, salt until creamy.
3. add baking soda, cream of tarter and slowly mix flour in until it is a nice dough.
4. mix cinnamon and sugar cookie coating in a shallow wide bowl, you can add sugar or cinnamon according to taste.
5. roll cookie dough into small balls.
6. roll balls of cookie dough in the cookie coating until completely covered.
7. place on greased cookie sheet.
8. bake for about 8-10 minutes.
